Past continuous uporabim pri:
1. NEDOVRŠNEM DEJANJU
I was reading a nice book.
She wasn’t painting in the studio.
Were they repairing the car?
2. NEDOVRŠNEM DEJANJU,
KI JE TEKLO V DOLOČENEM
TRENUTKU V PRETEKLOSTI.
We were watching the news at 19:30.
(we started watching the news at 19:00 and finished at 19:50, at 19:30 we were in the middle of watching the news)
A: What was he doing yesterday at 11 p.m.?
B: He was sleeping.
(he went to bed at 10 p.m. and woke up the next morning but at 11 p.m. he was in the middle of sleeping)
This time last week we were having a holiday.
3. DVEH NEDOVRŠNIH DEJANJIH
KI TEČETA ISTOČASNO.
I was making dinner and the radio was playing some nice music.
While Mary was studying for the exam, John was watching TV.
We were reading and the kids were drawing.
4. POGOSTO V KOMBINACIJI
S PAST SIMPLE ČASOM.
S past continuous časom označimo daljše dejanje, tisto, ki “teče v ozadju”.
S past simple časom označimo krajše dejanje, ki prekine daljše dejanje v past continuous času.
Prekinitev dejanja je lahko resnična:
When I was doing the dishes, my phone rang. (so I stopped doing the dishes and I answered the phone)
Prekinitev dejanja je lahko le navidezna:
Jack was cleaning the flat when the postman came. (Jack continued cleaning the flat and thought that he must empty the mailbox later)
While I was jogging, I saw a deer.
We were eating when Josh came.
While she was swimming, she got sick.
I wasn’t reading when she came in.
5. PAST CONTINUOUS
KOT OZADJE ZGODBE.
Past continuous lahko uporabimo, da orišemo, predstavimo ozadje zgodbe.
The trip to the beach was so much fun. The sun was shining, the children were playing in the sun and running around. The adults were enjoying a game of badminton and a chilled glass of wine. Suddenly some black clouds came out of nowhere…
6. DEJANJU, KI SE PONAVLJA,
IN GA GOVOREC VIDI, DOŽIVLJA
KOT NADLEŽNO, NEPRIJETNO.
Pogosto z ALWAYS, CONSTANTLY.
Jack was always forgetting his keys.
(and we hated it)
Sarah was constantly coming to school without books.
(and I didn’t like it)
